A picture tells a thousand words as the saying goes. To put this to the test, we invited 18 iconic influencers to each write an 1000 word essay telling the stories behind 18 rarely seen photographs, all to celebrate Ray-Ban’s 75th anniversary.
Ray-Ban has a rich heritage, but the media tended to focus around a few cliché images like Tom Cruise wearing aviators in Top Gun. For Legends: Untold Stories, a limited edition one-off publication, we took a step back and, through painstaking research of private archives around the world, dug out an entirely fresh set of new stories to reflect the brand’s significance 75 years on. We tracked down the images, uncovered the stories behind them and then invited some incredible people to write about them.
The book takes the reader on a journey spanning from 1943 where Beth Ditto celebrates early trailblazers of women’s liberation and looks at the way Ray-Ban aviators helped aeronautical development; to 1979 where Iggy Pop toasts Keith Richards in his Learjet with the birth of the great rock ’n’ roll tour; to Pharrell Williams’ personal memories of the legendary Michael Jackson. It shows how, decade-by-decade, Ray-Ban has been at the forefront of style and culture since its inception in 1937.
Since publication extracts and imagery from Legends: Untold Stories have appeared in newspapers, magazines and online titles around the world.
