To encapsulate real beauty, you have to go to real people. That was the thinking behind Beauty Portraits, Dove’s 2016 Instagram campaign.
We teamed up with Vice to create portraits of eleven women, all with unique beauty stories to tell: from Christa, who’d spent her life coming to terms with her alopecia, to Marlyee, who for years straightened her curly hair to fit in with what she had been told was beautiful.
We sent our journalists to interview them on set, chatting about their lives and attitudes to beauty. These long conversations were then condensed into first person narratives in which each woman recounted her beauty journey in her own words.
Here’s an excerpt from Christa’s portrait: “I wore a wig from when my hair fell out aged seven to when I was 25. I didn’t feel beautiful at all growing up. When you’re a kid you just want to be like every other kid. Being different was not something that I was interested in at all. I wanted to be like everyone else.”
