Sugar and Spice: capturing gender stereotypes

Sugar and Spice: capturing gender stereotypes

Somewhere in this image, there’s a baby. A girl; but you could probably tell that from the onslaught of fuschia – and that’s the point. ‘Jiwon and Her Pink Things’ is just one in a series of photographs by South Korean artist Jeong Mee Yoon that examines the link between gender and colour – and a lot more.

A culmination of more than 10 years, The Pink and Blue Project is an ongoing series which sees boys and girls pictured in their rooms (though you’d be forgiven for thinking they were shopping in Hamley’s), almost lost in a sea of countless objects. Each image is striking alone – but viewed together they’re charged with meaning, making a comment on consumerism, capitalism, the globalization of cultural trends and preferences, and of course pinpointing an age-old insight in a fresh, visually arresting way: that gender stereotypes endure – however hard we try to diffuse them.
